  1. Ambivalent(adj.) conflicted or contradictory emotions about someone or something
  2. Lucrative(adj.) profitable, money-making
  3. Obscured –  (v.) blocked; not easily seen
  4. Demean(v.) to humiliate or mortify
  5. Disposition – (n.) the usual attitude or mood of a person or animal.
  6. Avocation – (n.) a hobby or minor profession
  7. Pacify(v.)  restore to a state of peace or tranquility; quiet; calm
  8. Haven – (n.)  a place of safety or refuge

Reading Log #2

The final date to turn in Reading Log #2 for this quarter is tomorrow.  I have announced this frequently in class, so consider yourself warned! You can find a copy of this log here.  Just print out a copy, complete the log, and turn it into your block tray by tomorrow (April 18, 2014).  You can also submit your log online here.  Remember that I need two (2) of these filled out.  

Also, I will no longer accept logs regarding The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  You have finished this book already, and it is time to start reading something new and exciting.

Listening Comprehension Skills

Students can become better readers by honing their listening skills.  During our reading blocks yesterday and today, students listened to me read a short article twice on the history of April Fool's Day.  After the second reading, they took a short quiz about what they learned from the reading.  Students did very well, but the readings will become longer and more complex as the semester continues.
